Shanghai is bracing for its first cold wave of the season next week, with temperatures set to plunge by as much as 11 degrees Celsius, the city's weather bureau said on Friday.

The strong cold front is expected to sweep in late Monday, driving temperatures down by 9–11 degrees within 48 hours.

Downtown districts will bottom out at 4–5 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, while suburban areas may dip to 0–2 degrees, with frost and thin ice likely in some spots.

Light and brief showers may accompany the front from Monday to Tuesday.

Meteorologists said the cold wave is arriving earlier than usual; Shanghai's first major chill typically doesn't hit until early December.

Residents are advised to take precautions against respiratory and cardiovascular risks linked to the sudden temperature drop.

Temperatures will start to rise again from Thursday, with highs climbing above 15 degrees later in the week.
