Fotografiska Shanghai is honored to present the first major posthumous retrospective of Sebastião Salgado (1944-2025) since his passing.
Organized in collaboration with the Chengdu Contemporary Image Museum and with academic support from Jean-Luc Monterosso and special support by the Consulate General of Brazil in Shanghai, the exhibition is a profound reflection on nearly five decades of Salgado's iconic work.
Featuring landmark series such as "Genesis," "Workers," "Migrations," "Sahel," "The Scent of a Dream" and "Other Americas," the exhibition traces Salgado's extraordinary ability to capture both the epic and the intimate – from remote natural landscapes to stories of displacement, labor and resilience.
His black-and-white images, known for their monumental scale and emotional depth, transcend traditional documentary photography, offering a powerful lens on the social and environmental urgencies of our time.
More than a visual archive, Salgado's photographs serve as meditations on human dignity and planetary fragility. Through immersive sensory installations and a dynamic public program of talks, workshops and events, Fotografiska Shanghai invites audiences to engage deeply with Salgado's vision – one that continues to challenge, inspire and unite.
