China has officially added Indonesia to its growing list of countries eligible for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, bringing the total to 55, according to an announcement by the National Immigration Administration (NIA) on Thursday.
The move, effective immediately, allows Indonesian citizens to enter China without a visa when transiting to a third country or region.
Under the policy, eligible travelers must hold valid international travel documents and confirmed connecting tickets with specified dates and seats.
They may enter through any of China's 60 designated open ports located across 24 provinces, including major hubs such as Beijing and Shanghai, and stay in designated areas for up to 240 hours (10 days).
Travelers can participate in activities such as tourism, business meetings, cultural exchanges, or visiting family during their stay. Activities requiring prior approval – such as employment, study, or journalism – still require a valid visa.
The visa-free transit policy was significantly expanded earlier, on December 17 last year, when the Chinese government extended the 240-hour visa-free transit to citizens of 54 countries. That milestone marked a major step in facilitating international travel and enhancing China's connectivity with the world.
With the inclusion of Indonesia, the policy now covers a wider geographic reach, further supporting China's strategic engagement with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries.
A spokesperson for the NIA emphasized that the move aligns with China's broader efforts to deepen regional cooperation and promote people-to-people exchanges. "This policy adjustment strengthens bilateral ties, facilitates trade and investment, and fosters mutual understanding between China and Indonesia," the official noted.
The NIA also reaffirmed its commitment to improving immigration services and optimizing entry and exit policies for international travelers. More institutional reforms are expected to follow as China seeks to enhance convenience and accessibility for foreigners visiting, living, or doing business in the country.
