The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau upgraded its heavy rain alert from blue to yellow at 5:26pm today, as the city braces for intense downpours. According to the forecast, short-term heavy rainfall of 40-60mm per hour is expected across the city before midnight tonight.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant, as the strong precipitation may cause localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Relevant departments have been advised to reinforce drainage and flood prevention measures in susceptible zones.
In response, Shanghai has officially activated a Level III (Yellow) emergency response for flood and typhoon control. This marks a heightened state of readiness to ensure public safety and infrastructure stability amid worsening weather conditions.
Earlier issued alerts – including the yellow lightning warning, blue gale warning, orange heat wave alert, and yellow rainstorm warning – remain in effect, underscoring the city's complex and volatile weather conditions today.
Citizens are advised to stay indoors during severe weather, avoid waterlogged roads, and closely monitor official updates.
Level III (Yellow) emergency response for flood and typhoon control
Yellow Rain Storm Alert: Within the next 6 hours, one or both of the following conditions may occur or have already occurred and are likely to continue:
Hourly rainfall of 50mm or more, or total rainfall of 80mm or more within six hours.
Blue Gale Alert: Within 24 hours, average wind speeds may reach Force 6 or above, or gusts may exceed Force 8, and such conditions are likely to persist.
Yellow Lighting Alert: a high likelihood of lightning activity within the next six hours, or that lightning has already occurred and may continue to affect the area.
Orange heat wave alert: Daily high temperature expected to exceed 37°C
Yellow Hail Allert: Hail expected within 6 hours
