Beginning July 19, an additional 91 metro stations will begin testing "always-open" fare gates, expanding the pilot program to a total of 123 stations across 19 lines.
Under this system, fare gates remain open by default, but passengers are still required to tap their transit card or scan a QR code to enter. If the card or code is successfully detected, a green arrow will appear, and the gate will stay open. If not, the gates will automatically close to block entry.
First rolled out at three stations back in April 2024, the system was designed to speed up passenger flow as passengers don't have to wait for the fare gates to open and close.
A passenger scans to enter Wuzhong Road Station on Line 15, one of the earlier stations to trial the "always-open" fare gates.
