A launch ceremony for the new squad is held on Monday at Huangpu Park on the Bund.
From Monday, 100 police officers from Huangpu District will be patrolling major landmarks in the downtown district on motorcycles.
The motorcycle squad is the first of its kind in Shanghai.
Officers on the squad, assigned to 10 groups with 10 members each, will focus on the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, Xintiandi and Tianzifang. They will also stand by for assignments in other parts of the district.
Shi Qi, vice head of the district's SWAT police, said the officers were recruited from different departments and received two months of specialized training.
“As a mobile force, they will be able to deal with traffic accidents and congestion and emergencies which endanger public safety, as well as other scenarios in the streets which require intervention of the police,” he said.
Yang Jie, head of the district public security bureau, said this squad is an important patrol force, and one that will help keep the city safe during the upcoming China International Import Expo.
