Shanghai Book Fair to have two main venues this August

For the first time in its two-decade history, the Shanghai Book Fair will open in August with two primary venues: the Shanghai Exhibition Center and the Shanghai Book City.

The two hubs will coordinate the literary event, considerably extending both space and programming. This change reflects the fair's desire to transform from a typical book exposition to a vibrant cultural event woven into the fabric of everyday life.

The 2025 edition will take place from August 13 to 19, with a new "Double Main Venue + X + N" concept. While the two main venues will host key exhibitions, signings and new book launches, a network of auxiliary spaces – including district-level branches, bookstores, libraries and community centers – will extend the fair's reach throughout the city's communities.

A book fair of firsts

According to the organizer, the two venues mark a significant advancement in spatial design and guest experience.

The Shanghai Exhibition Center will feature a 42,000-square-meter main hall, showcasing themed exhibitions, publisher showcases and significant cultural events.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Book City will enhance its internal layout to accommodate increased book sales, thematic exhibitions and immersive reading experiences.

The two venues will have separate atmospheres yet will work together in harmony, with visitors moving seamlessly between them.

Admission to the Shanghai Exhibition Center will require a ticket, while Shanghai Book City will remain free to the public.

For the first time, the fair will also hand out public reading vouchers, making books more affordable and encouraging greater participation.

Shanghai Book City

At the Shanghai Exhibition Center, publishers will not only sell books but also related merchandise, literary IP-based products and cultural creative goods.

In the evenings, outdoor spaces like the fountain plaza and surrounding gardens will transform into a "Reading Night Market," adding a festive and social atmosphere to the book fair experience.

At Shanghai Book City, thematic exhibitions such as the "Yuewen 10-Year IP Retrospective" and tourism-inspired reading activities will bring books closer to lifestyle.

The book fair will be transformed into a multi-sensory exploration of Shanghai culture through partnerships with regional companies like Bright Dairy and city organizations like the tourism association. These partnerships will also bring traditional "book fair day tour" itineraries and immersive non-heritage experiences.

Ensuring a safe and accessible event

With tens of thousands of people expected to participate, the fair's organizers are bracing for every scenario.

Heat relief, rain shelters and upgraded medical and food facilities will be in place. Enhanced accessibility measures, such as separate entry lanes for the elderly and disabled, will ensure that everyone can enjoy the event in safety and comfort.

For better navigation and crowd management, digital guides and real-time visitor updates will be implemented. Volunteer services and on-site security will be increased to ensure smooth operations and provide support as needed.
