Shanghai-HK high-speed train: Riding the rails in style and fast

January 5 marked a grand new chapter in the world of high-speed rail as China's national railway system announced a major update. And guess what? The high-speed train connections between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland also got a serious upgrade! Let's break down what this means, especially for our Shanghai-to-Hong Kong route lovers.

A Network That Never Sleeps: 93 Cities Now Connected to Hong Kong

The new rail map expands Hong Kong's high-speed train connections to 93 cities on the Chinese mainland. That's right, from cultural hubs like Xi'an, Wuhan, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Mount Huangshan, to economic powerhouses, all now have direct trains to the Chinese special administrative region.

This transformation creates a network where travelers can easily hop from the "Silk Road's starting point" to the "Pearl of the Orient."

The Shanghai-Hong Kong Connection

For those keeping an eye on the ever-popular Shanghai-Hong Kong route, here's what you need to know:

Two Dynamic Duos: Shanghai to Hong Kong boasts two direct high-speed train pairs – G99/100 and G899/900. These are currently the only direct high-speed options linking the Yangtze River Delta region and Hong Kong, making them the superstars of this connection.

G99/100: This route now runs on a newly adjusted path via the Shanghai-Suzhou-Huzhou, Hefei-Hangzhou, Hangzhou-Nanchang and Beijing-Hong Kong high-speed railways. It starts at Shanghai Hongqiao, passing through stops like Suzhou South, Hangzhou West, Huangshan North, and Nanchang East before reaching Hong Kong West Kowloon. The entire journey takes 8 hours and 3 minutes.

Key stops include Shanghai Hongqiao, Hangzhou East, Ningbo, Shenzhen North and Hong Kong West Kowloon (with G900 adding stops at Chaoshan and Xiamen North).

Previously, a trip from China's northwestern or central regions to Hong Kong was a complex ordeal. Now, it's a breeze, reducing both the travel time and the hassle.

The launch of this route has been met with enthusiastic response – so much so that tour groups for the inaugural journey were fully booked within days. For at least 1,157.5 yuan (US$158), tourists can also explore iconic Xi'an landmarks like the Terracotta Warriors.
