Shanghai South Railway Station gears up for high-speed rail era

Shanghai South Railway Station is set to undergo a significant transformation as it upgrades to a high-speed train station, with a trial operation scheduled to commence on December 28.

This is great news for Shanghai citizens traveling outside the city, as the closer proximity of the South Station to the city center makes it more convenient for those leaving to catch high-speed trains.

Located in Xuhui Distrct, the station is serviced by Metro lines 1, 3, and 15, making it more accessible to popular destinations such as Huaihai Road, People's Square, and Shanghai Railway Station. For passengers heading to the Shanghai Stadium or the Xujiahui area, choosing to arrive at Shanghai South will be more convenient.

Shanghai South Railway Station

From January 5, 2025, Shanghai South Railway Station will launch direct high-speed rail services to Lishui and Ningbo in Zhejiang Province.

With the launch of the direct high-speed train service from Shanghai South to Lishui, the G7193 train will operate daily, passing through Jiaxing South, Haining West, Hangzhou East, Wuyi North, Yongkang South, and Jinyun West.

For high-speed rail travel from Ningbo to Shanghai, passengers will have the option of traveling to either Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station or Shanghai South Railway Station.

However, specific departure times and schedules for trains from Ningbo to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station will be subject to the final train timetable released by the railway authorities.

China Railway Bureau's 12306 website has announced that some trains departing from Ningbo have been adjusted to arrive at Shanghai South Station.

As part of the upgrade to a high-speed railway station, Shanghai South Railway Station will introduce optimized arrangements for parking, passenger pick-up, and waiting areas, starting from this Saturday. It aims to accommodate the increased train services and passenger flow.

1 Optimized layout of passenger pick-up areas for ride-hailing vehicles and taxis

The new plan will establish a clear layout for different types of vehicles: ride-hailing vehicles will use the ground level; taxis will be directed to the first underground level; and private vehicles will be guided to the underground garage. This reorganization aims to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion around the station.

Currently, all the signs outside the station and in the surrounding area have been updated.

Ride-hailing vehicles:

The South Square will have a designated ride-hailing vehicle pick-up point on Donglinansi Road. The pick-up point at the North Square is on Donglinbeiyi Road, spanning over a hundred meters. It is equipped with brand new canopies and divided into 4 sections, each about 30-35 meters long and marked with different fruit signs.

These areas will be equipped with electronic fences and will only allow vehicles that have already received permission to enter.

In addition, turnstiles have been installed at the entrance of the ride-hailing vehicle lanes, permitting only buses and vehicles with confirmed orders to pass. A three-minute time-limited parking monitoring system is also to be installed.

Taxi: Dedicated parking areas have been set up in both the North Square and South Square, capable of accommodating nearly 300 taxis.

Private vehicles: Private vehicles will be directed to the underground garage, with the outer lanes of the first underground level being off-limits for temporary stops.

2 Rearrangement of waiting areas for passengers

The station's passenger waiting areas will also see changes. From December 24, the waiting area for passengers taking the Jinshan Railway at Shanghai South Station will be relocated from the South Square to the North Square.

The passenger entrance will be adjusted to the Jinshan Railway entrance on the west side of the 1st floor of the North Square of Shanghai South Station (near Metro Lines 1 and 15), and the exit will be adjusted to the northwest exit. Passengers transferring to the Metro on exiting will be able to enjoy one-way security check exemption.

A dedicated waiting room for Jinshan Railway passengers will also be put into use, equipped with a service center, restrooms, air conditioning, and dynamic and static signage.
