The 2025 Shanghai Night Festival officially opened on the evening of June 6 at Columbia Circle in downtown Changning district, launching a three-day opening carnival and marking the start of a summer-long celebration of the city’s dynamic nighttime economy.
Running from June to September, the festival serves as a prelude to Shanghai Summer, also known as the Shanghai International Consumption Season, which will run from July to October.
The opening ceremony was attended by government officials, business leaders, and a group of so-called "nightlife visionaries"—creative individuals behind some of the city’s most innovative nighttime experiences.
This year’s festival introduces over 130 themed events under the slogan “Night Live Goes On,” including Trendy Sports Night, E-Sports Life Month, and the Shanghai Night Live Music Season.
These initiatives aim to enhance the city’s after-dark vibrancy for both residents and visitors.
A key highlight of the launch was the release of the 2025 China Urban Night Economy Vitality Index, which ranked Shanghai as the national leader in nighttime vitality based on metrics such as foot traffic, density of nightlife venues, and late-night cinema attendance.
Popular nightlife hotspots include Nanjing Road, Xujiahui, and the area surrounding Jing’an Temple.
To stimulate consumption, the “Summer Night Consumption Carnival”—a promotional campaign by Pudong Development Bank—was also rolled out, offering financial incentives such as discounts of up to 66 yuan ($9.19) for nighttime spending.
Also unveiled at the ceremony were several flagship events and projects: the fifth season of Nightlife Visionaries, a mini-documentary series profiling innovators in Shanghai’s night economy; the first customized night bus route connecting key commercial areas like the Bund and Xintiandi; and immersive new consumption experiences such as "bus + shopping" and "cruise + dining."
Featured attractions include the FEAST Food Carnival at Columbia Circle, the Shanghai Craft Beer Festival at Suhe MixC World, and AI-powered interactive retail experiences by Bailian Group.
This year’s Nightlife Visionaries series highlights five trailblazers shaping Shanghai’s nocturnal landscape, including the founder of China’s first barrier-free bar for people with disabilities, the organizer of a local craft beer festival, and entrepreneurs integrating reading, fitness, and nightlife into novel consumption scenes.
The festival’s three-day opening carnival will showcase 45 brands across seven themes—dining, shopping, entertainment, and more—offering immersive experiences such as pop-up art installations, live music, and interactive exhibitions.
Since its launch in 2020, the Shanghai Night Festival has evolved into a flagship event for the city’s “sleepless economy,” promoting a diverse nighttime ecosystem spanning food, retail, tourism, performances, reading, and fitness.
With its 2025 edition, the festival continues to integrate culture, innovation, and inclusivity, reinforcing Shanghai's role as a leader in China's expanding night economy.
