Strong winds and heavy rain sweep through Shanghai under the impact of Typhoon Co-may.

Typhoon Co-may made landfall in Fengxian District this afternoon, bringing fierce winds and heavy rain that quickly disrupted Shanghai's extensive transportation network.

Typhoon Co-may made landfall in Fengxian District this afternoon, bringing fierce winds and heavy rain.

Roadways

  • All expressways are under reduced speed limits of 40km/h.
  • Donghai Bridge is further restricted to 30km/h due to storm intensity.
  • S4 Expressway: The Jindu Road entrance (Jinshan direction) is closed.
  • On elevated roads, the Inner Ring Road's Jinshajiang Road exit is now restricted to public buses only.

Ferry services

  • All inter-island passenger ferries, city ferry lines, and tourist cruises – including Suzhou Creek and Huangpu River sightseeing boats – have been completely suspended until further notice.

Air and rail

If you had planned long-distance travel via air or rail, you'll need to double check to see if it's been cancelled.

  • Pudong and Hongqiao airports report numerous flight cancellations and delays.
  • Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South, Hongqiao, and Songjiang stations have partial service suspensions. To check if your train is still running, call 12306.

Metro and maglev operations

Shanghai Metro has imposed speed restrictions on Line 2 (elevated section) and Line 16 is slowed to 60km/h. The maglev train however continues to operate normally.

Weather outlook

Short-Term Forecast

  • During the evening commute, wind and rain eased temporarily as the city passed through the typhoon's eye.
  • Conditions are expected to worsen again overnight, with thunderstorms, strong gusts and localized heavy rainfall.

Looking ahead

  • Tomorrow: Conditions will gradually improve as Co-may moves into Jiangsu Province.
  • Friday to Saturday: Lingering showers are expected.
  • From Sunday: A strengthening subtropical high will bring sunny, hot weather, with temperatures rising above 35 degrees Celsius as Shanghai enters the peak of midsummer.
