With the arrival of summer, comes the peak season for snake bites. Shanghai has 13 hospitals that are designated facilities for such cases.

Longhua Hospital, which has the most experience of snake bites, has a regular store of antivenins. It has dealt with 15 cases since May.

It saw 88 cases last year from Shanghai and nearby regions, and almost 400 cases in the past decade.

A 23-year-old man visited the hospital's emergency room at midnight last Tuesday after being bitten by a snake he had raised himself.

It was a Gloydius cognatus, a poisonous snake usually seen in northwest China.

There are over 200 types of snake in China, including some 50 poisonous ones. Among them, about 10 types can cause fatalities. More than 200,000 people are bitten in China each year with a 5 to 10 percent mortality rate.

"In Shanghai, most patients are bitten by Agkistrodon halys, which is a common snake in the city. They usually stay in the grass and waterside," said Dr Que Huafa, director of Longhua's TCM surgery department.

"There are big difference between being bitten by poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. If bitten by a poisonous snake, people can suffer numbness, swelling and pain around the bite area and the feeling can spread from there to the heart. People also can suffer symptoms such as vomitting, dizziness and double vision. But bites from non-poisonous snake don't cause these symptoms," Que said.

"But snakes with neurotoxins like Bungarus multicinctus usually don't cause significant symptoms until four to six hours later. So it is important to visit a hospital in time and stay there until six hours later to ensure safety," Que added.

It is important to tie up the injured limb. Remember 1) Tie the bandage at a joint closer to the heart; 2) The bandage should be moderately tight – not too tight or left on for too long; 3) Loosen the bandage for 1-2 minutes every 15-20 minutes.
