Foreign passengers wait for their flight at the check-in area of Shanghai Pudong Airport's Terminal 1.
The Shanghai Pudong International Airport officially launched 24-hour domestic departure security check services at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 on May 10, enhancing convenience for late-night and transit passengers.
Passenger traffic at Shanghai’s airports has seen continued growth in 2025. During the recent May Day holiday alone, Pudong and Hongqiao airports handled a combined 1.937 million passenger trips — an average of 387,000 per day, up 14.1 percent year-on-year. International passenger volume saw a 24 percent annual increase, averaging 114,000 daily.
To better accommodate travelers on late-night flights and overnight connections, Pudong Airport piloted 24-hour domestic security checks at Terminal 1 ahead of the five-day holiday, following a "same-day flight, same-day screening" model.
Passengers arriving in Shanghai during the early hours for transfers or taking domestic flights can proceed through security at any time after completing check-in and luggage drop-off. Following positive feedback, the service has now been extended to Terminal 2. The airport also dynamically adjusts the number of open security lanes based on real-time passenger flow.
