Copy Editor's Note: Welcome to our final edition of this year's Street Chic. Earlier this year, the "First in Shanghai" initiative was announced, part of a global promotion program to showcase Shanghai's ascendancy as a fashion capital. The thought had rumbled around in our minds for quite some time that we ought to pay homage to the city's trendsetting in style. We pass by many of these fashionistas on Anfu Road, or at Xintiandi, and other places in the city, and when they're captured in stills, it begs the question who are they? So, we took our own little spin.
Here's a re-cap, and link-back in case you missed any:
This one was fun. We had to get over ourselves and talk to people. Plenty said no. But more than enough said yes. There's way more skin in July than December that's for sure. We shot over 3 weeks.
This one, strangely... had more modesty despite it being a month where everyone was melting. But we had our best run with gentlemen in this edition, and even covered a love story.
September: Cooling Down Finally
The weather is so nice in September. A wide variety of styles with people dressed to the max to enjoy Shanghai's least humid, most pleasant month.
In October we changed things up by giving the pen over to Fashion Design student, Tima Fei. Finally someone who knows fashion. Plus, that GenZ wit... we're fine with more of that (even though they make us feel old).
What happened... only four beauties this month? Well folks, we got slightly distracted by CIIE this month (and so did you all!).
This month, we have a special guest author, Taiwanese fashion designer Liu Yung Ming. Liu was totally at home grabbing people to take photos at the Christmas market this year, with an eye that honed him in on details. He's more direct to the point in commenting on Shanghai's fashion sense, which seems to be something he loves doing. It's been fun doing these, although we really need to find more guys. Anyway, do you'll enjoy them? Let us know in the comments, which month was your favorite. Without further adieu... our last Street Chic for the year. (All photos by Ma Xuefeng)
Wearing an oversized beret that evokes the free-spirited image of an artist, paired with a pearl-embellished slogan delicately adorning a cozy down jacket, the look reveals a vibrant red cardigan beneath – a perfect nod to the festive Christmas spirit. The cropped proportions of the top are cleverly balanced with an asymmetrical black pleated skirt, creating an overall silhouette that radiates runway-worthy elegance.
Among the many accessories, the choice of a patent leather bag and boots ensures that each piece commands attention with lightning speed. Fashion, after all, is an act of imagination – it has no destination, only the pure joy of the journey.
Once again, we're reminded that vibrant reds and bold energy are the ultimate contenders in the fashion race of the Christmas market. A beret, a red vest, a dash of purple mink, a Captain Hook-style belt, California girl-inspired washed jeans and chunky platform boots – this eclectic mix channels the spirit of a K-pop girl group, emerging as a true standout in this festive competition.
Don't hold back in expressing yourself, and never worry that your radiant confidence will go unnoticed. The Christmas market overflows with love, and just like the stylishly dressed women, it, too, is painted in shades of red.
Here's another effortlessly chic and urban-inspired casual look. A flowing trench coat paired with the largest possible scarf creates an iconic duo on the fashionable streetscape. The focus naturally falls on the line that extends from the neck down to the hem – a testament to the power of a statement piece. With minimal layering, it effortlessly exudes an air of sophistication.
Look closer at the details: glasses, hairpins, handbags, and shoes. Each accessory reveals a world of diverse tastes and a deeply personal approach to self-expression. But the most unparalleled fashion element in this ensemble isn't an accessory – it's the radiant smile that blooms after soaking in the festive warmth of the Christmas season.
In winter, the most essential elements are plush accents and the patchwork details of quilted fabrics. On Shanghai's streets of Christmas markets, fashionable women, like this young lady, flaunt outfits adorned with cozy touches of fluff, warming up the cold season's style. From collars and cuffs to the trim of boots, these plush design features infuse a sense of snug sophistication, adding depth to winter fashion.
With vintage-inspired hair accessories atop their heads and shoulder bags embellished with velvet details, paired with snow boots and mountaineering ropes in red-and-white patterns, we see how elegance can harmonize effortlessly with streetwear, creating a polished and refined presence.
A flawless and refined monochromatic outfit becomes the epitome of elegance against the backdrop of a festive Christmas market drenched in red. The black, white, and gray tweed coat not only highlights winter's heavier wardrobe staples but also wraps the body in comforting warmth. A cream-colored hat and uniquely designed knit top complement each other not just in tone but also in delivering the perfect endorsement for a woman of exceptional taste.
Rabbit fur earrings and a high-end, exquisitely chosen luxury shoulder bag add a touch of stylish warmth to the overall vibe. A closer look reveals the carefully selected wide-leg gray pants with clean lines, paired with square-toed leather shoes – effortlessly showcasing an urban sophistication.
There's never any need to worry about a sophisticated woman – she will always offer you a richer fashion gospel. In this ensemble, aside from the beige coat, everything has been imbued with the mysterious allure of black. Yet true elegance always hides in the most subtle details, leaving you marveling at the secret behind such impeccable style.
We see quilted leather gloves paired with plush, warming fur, and a patchwork bag that transitions effortlessly from hand-held to shoulder-worn. Together, these elements reflect a uniquely refined taste. Add textured, taupe-hued socks styled with chunky platform loafers, and it becomes clear that the gospel of fashion is found in every thoughtful detail.
One of the golden rules of fashion is that when sisters step out together, they bring an undeniable force of style. You can see an almost perfectly synchronized aura between them, with each piece of their outfits showcasing a harmony of similarities and subtle differences. This is the ultimate expression of duo power, presenting the strongest and most captivating side of fashion.
From head to toe, we spot cozy rabbit fur ear muffs, luxurious mink coats, oversized tops paired with slim-fitting pants. Whether it's high boots or sneakers connected by playful bubble socks, the Christmas market effortlessly becomes a scene of casual yet chic elegance.
Bonus picks
Bold, youthful lines and the thrill of a Christmas market come to life in this extraordinary ensemble. Shorts with a flag motif bring a carnival-like energy, grounded by red argyle knit socks that anchor the look. It's a combination that channels the spirit of the '80s while capturing the carefree essence of youth. A cropped top continues to tell the same joyful story, tying the pieces together with effortless playfulness.
A plaid scarf in classic Christmas colors adds a cozy warmth to the winter vibe. And let's not forget – youth is fashion's greatest weapon. Embrace your passion, savor every heartbeat against the chill, and let the energy of style inspire those around you to run forward together.
