Life between the plane trees: A designer's guide around Tianping Road

Originally from Siberia, Irina Verchagina moved to Shanghai in 2008, a city that continues to inspire her with its contrasts, colors and cultural richness. She is the founder and designer behind Too Hao (WeChat mini program: too hao), a lifestyle brand known for its silk accessories and loungewear featuring playful, China-inspired prints. With a deep appreciation for Chinese visual culture and a flair for the unexpected, Irina brings classical motifs to life with bold colors, whimsical details and empowered female characters.

Introduce your neighborhood

I live in Shanghai's tree-lined downtown, at the intersection of Tianping and Huaihai roads, in Xuhui District.

Walking through the leafy street is one of those simple, daily pleasures Irina never takes for granted.

What's the best thing about living in this neighborhood?

The intersection itself is quite iconic – just steps from the famous Wukang Mansion – so it's almost always buzzing with tourists snapping selfies (sometimes to an absurd degree). But once you move beyond the crossing, the atmosphere changes entirely. The streets grow quieter, shaded by lush plane trees and lined with charming European-style residences, cozy cafés and intimate restaurants. I love this neighborhood. It's incredibly convenient – I can hop on my bike and get almost anywhere in the city center. Cruising through these leafy lanes is one of those simple, daily pleasures I never take for granted.

Irina loves sitting outside with her little chihuahua, Chi, sipping a coffee, reading on her e-reader, or simply people watching.

Each person may have different views, but they all want a great cafe. What's your favorite cafe near home?

My personal favorite near home is Faust Café on Tianping Road (216 Tianping Rd 天平路216号). The space is infused with artistic and literary charm, true to its name. I love sitting outside with my little chihuahua, Chi, sipping a coffee, reading on my e-reader, or simply people-watching. Every coffee comes with a tiny flower and a short Chinese poem, adding a thoughtful, poetic touch. It's a peaceful, creative haven – the staff are warm, and the owner actively supports local artists. They even host occasional art and poetry gatherings, which gives the place a real sense of community.

Avec Toi has a wonderfully authentic French vibe, with fresh bread baked daily and an irresistible aroma that fills the street.

Where to eat around here?

We're lucky to have some great bakeries in the neighborhood. My go-to is Avec Toi (73 Tianping Rd 天平路73号), a charming little spot run by an older Japanese gentleman who, I believe, once lived in Paris. The bakery has a wonderfully authentic French vibe, with fresh bread baked daily and an irresistible aroma that fills the street. I often stop by during morning walks with Chi. Their ciabattas – infused with creative ingredients – are a favorite, and the classic sourdough is fantastic. While I'm not usually into sweet pastries, the ones I've tried there are excellent. They also serve coffee, and the second-floor patio is a lovely place to sit.

Everything at Ginger is fresh and vibrant, with fragrant herbs and bold flavors.

For dinner, I love Ginger on Xingguo Road (兴国路91号). It's cozy and inviting, with a great patio for evening meals. I'm not typically a fan of fusion cuisine, but their Asian fusion food completely won me over. Everything is fresh and vibrant, with fragrant herbs and bold flavors. Their cocktails are also top-notch – it's the kind of place where you can truly unwind and enjoy a relaxed night out.

Fuchun Delight is clean, well-decorated and perfect for introducing visitors to classic Shanghainese dishes and the famous xiaolongbao (little steamed buns).

And for something quick, local and comforting: xiaolongbao (little steamed buns)! They're my ultimate comfort food – especially after a night out. 😄 My husband and I have two go-to places. One is Fuchun Delight (富春小笼馆) (652 Jianguo Rd W. 建国西路652号) – clean, well-decorated and perfect for introducing visitors to classic Shanghainese dishes. The other is a true hole-in-the-wall near the Jianguo and Gao'an road intersection, Man Man Tang Bao 曼曼汤包 (641Jianguo Rd W 建国西路641号). The setting is simple and no-frills, but the xiaolongbao is delicious. The owners are incredibly friendly and even offer vegan versions on request. It's also known for its extensive congee menu – if that's your thing.

Single Person offers beautifully designed home goods – candles, home fragrances, vases, ceramics and more.

When it comes to fashion, I usually shop while traveling – I love collecting unique pieces from local artisans and independent labels abroad. But here in Shanghai, I enjoy visiting markets like Jiashan Lane Market or Commune Market to support local designers and makers.

Closer to home, I adore a shop called Single Person (45 Tianping Rd天平路45号). They specialize in beautifully designed home goods – candles, home fragrances, vases, ceramics, and more – all in playful colors and unique shapes. It's one of my go-to spots for thoughtful gifts and small home upgrades.

For a fancier night out, Bar No. 3 is a fantastic choice.

One of the Alldays convenience stores at the corner of Tianping and Guangyuan roads has converted part of the shop into a little Alldays Bar.

Any neighborhood place for a night out or simply a drink after work?

For a fancier night out, Bar No. 3 (277 Xingguo Rd 兴国路277号) is a fantastic choice. Their cocktail list is extensive and well-crafted, though on the pricier side. The moody, intimate interior is ideal for a special night out, though it does get busy on weekends.

For something casual (and nostalgic), I still love the Basil Drops at Sichuan Citizen (2/F, 378 Wukang Rd 武康路378号2楼) in Ferguson Lane – they're dangerously good. It's great to have that option just a short walk away.

And here's a quirky surprise: One of the Alldays convenience stores at the corner of Tianping and Guangyuan roads has converted part of the shop into a little Alldays Bar. I haven't tried it yet, but it often draws a fun crowd grabbing cocktails and beers. Definitely on my list.

A café tucked inside the Soho Garden Villa Hotel on Tai'an Road is a recent discovery for Irina.

Any new discovery in your neighborhood lately?

Yes! I recently stumbled upon a hidden gem on Tai'an Road – a café tucked inside the Soho Garden Villa Hotel (Lane 115 Tai'an Rd 泰安路115弄). The hotel itself is located in an old French-style villa compound and has a beautiful private garden. The café sits in a small, detached building inside the compound and feels like a secret escape from the city. It's tranquil and green, plus there are a couple of adorably chubby cats roaming around, always ready for a cuddle if you're lucky. A perfect new hideaway.
