Shanghai has a comprehensive health-care system that is comprised of general hospitals, specialized hospitals, community health service centers, community health service stations, outpatient departments, clinics and emergency centers.
In addition to state-run public medical facilities, there are also private medical facilities (including foreign-owned hospitals and clinics). You are free to choose whichever medical institution best meets your needs and shall be charged the same fees as Chinese citizens.
In case of an emergency, call 120 for on-site first aid, emergency treatment in transit, and care-oriented medical services. Almost all hospitals are equipped with an emergency department to provide such medical treatment.
Public hospitals
There are 55 city-level and 120 district-level public hospitals in Shanghai and most have VIP or international patient section, which provide better environment and are covered by medical insurance.
Service staff have bilingual capabilities. Expats can consult at the reception desk of each hospital or check each hospital's website or public WeChat account.
