The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center's first Shanghai-dialect production "Everlasting Regret" has made a return to the stage for a new round of performances through September 14.

Adapted from Shanghai writer Wang Anyi's award-winning novel "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow," the drama traces the life story and romantic encounters of a Shanghainese girl Wang Qiyao from the 1940s to the 1980s.

"Everlasting Regret" is the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center's first Shanghai-dialect production.

Through the play, audiences can get a glimpse of a changing Shanghai and its complicated contemporary history spanning roughly four decades of the 20th century.

"The original novel was well written with so much detail," said director Zhou Xiaoqian.

"The characters' emotions and thinkings are all showcased in their movements, and the actors just have to present them on the stage," she said.

The story covers Shanghai's contemporary history spanning roughly four decades.

Actress Liu Xiaoliang plays the lead role of Wang Qiyao, the tragic heroine of the novel. Obsessed with the glamour of Hollywood, her entry to the 1946 "Miss Shanghai" pageant marks the pinnacle of her life. In the following four decades, she struggles to cling to that glorious moment.

Though all performers in the play are Shanghainese, the creators invited Shanghai Farce Troupe veteran actor Qian Cheng to be the language director of the play.

"With actors presenting the very original taste of Shanghai-dialect, we hope the play can attract all people who are interested in Shanghai culture to the theater," said Qian.
