The city's annual auto carnival attracts large crowds.
Shanghai's Putuo District is offering 50 million yuan (US$20.6 million) in car subsidies to boost consumer spending during the city's annual car shopping carnival that ends on May 5.
The incentives cover both gasoline and new-energy vehicles. Subsidies follow a tiered structure: Cars priced under 500,000 yuan will receive a 3,000-yuan subsidy, while vehicles priced between 500,000 and 1 million yuan are eligible for a 5,000-yuan subsidy. Cars priced over 1 million yuan will receive a 10,000-yuan subsidy.
To qualify, buyers must purchase a new car (for non-commercial use) within Putuo District between May 1 and December 31.
Vehicles must meet China's National VI-B emission standards. Subsidies are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The main venue of the Auto Carnival is at Zhenru Unipark MAX on Tongchuan Road. The event features a car trunk market, coffee pop-ups, lifestyle booths, and opportunities for test drives.
The festival aims to blend car shopping with food, art, and leisure. Popular bakeries and coffee shops from across the country are also participating, making the event appealing even to those not planning to buy a car.
Families can enjoy interactive installations such as themed pop-ups based on "Minecraft," traditional crafts, wellness markets, and neighborhood-themed fairs.
