Flowers blossom in spring, and Chinese roses blossom at the "In the Name of Flowers" exhibition.
It is one of the project of "Growing Arts and Humanities" initiated by the Pearl Art Museum in 2020.
Under the framework of this project, exhibitions will be held at Chenshan Botanical Garden, Sinan Bookstore, the School of Foreign Languages at East China Normal University, and the "Center of Light Space" at Pearl Art Museum through June 25.
All the exhibitions involve Chinese roses.
Chen Danyan, a renowned Shanghai writer, was invited as a narrator to tell the stories of the different names of Chinese roses as they relate to her travels and works of world literature.
Having traveled in more than 600 cities and towns around the world in the past decades, Chen paused her journey over the past few years and engaged herself in the botanical world of the city's suburbs.
A sensitive and talented writer, she has grown familiar with the changing seasons at the Chenshan Botanical Garden and has a preference for the flowers and trees there.
"I feel that I am encouraged and comforted by nature," she said.
With a sound storyboard placed next to the Chinese roses at the exhibition, she starts from the name of the Chinese rose to illustrate her world view based on her personal life and her travel and world literature experiences.
"There are many ways to be with the world, the law of life operates in the law of nature," Chen said. "Sometimes life emerges at the blooming of a flower, and sometimes at its fading – an order of life and death."
