An ancient instrument once fading into obscurity is experiencing a powerful revival – thanks to the hands of a master.

On June 12, acclaimed Afghan rubab virtuoso Homayoun Sakhi will make a rare appearance in China, bringing the soul-stirring sound of the rubab to life for one unmissable evening of music.

Known as the "lion of instruments" and the "poet's lute," the rubab has carried the echoes of Central, South and West Asian civilizations for over a thousand years. Its name derives from "ru" (soul) and "bab" (door) – each note an invitation to step through a gateway of emotional resonance and cultural memory.

In 2024, rubab music was recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage, affirming its place in humanity's shared legacy.

At the forefront of this revival is Homayoun Sakhi, hailed by BBC Music Magazine as "a legend who seamlessly fuses tradition and innovation," and by Asia Society as "a treasure of Afghan cultural heritage."

Born into a family of musicians in Kabul, he has carried the rubab from war-torn Afghanistan to global concert halls, performing with luminaries such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Sakhi has not only preserved the rubab's rich tradition – he has reimagined it. Innovating on technique, he transformed the rubab from a supporting instrument into a powerful solo voice.

Homayoun Sakhi has not only preserved the rubab's rich tradition – he has reimagined it.

By blending influences from violin, sitar and guitar, and incorporating both upward and downward strokes, he has expanded its expressive possibilities. His performances are a living dialogue between East and West, past and present.

Following a sold-out European tour, Sakhi now brings his music to China, joined on stage by renowned tabla master Sabz Ali, heir to a storied lineage of classical percussion from Punjab. Together, rubab and tabla will engage in a spellbinding musical conversation – one that bridges languages, cultures and histories.

Renowned tabla master Sabz Ali will join Homayoun Sakhi on stage for the concert.

In a world often focused on the East-West divide, this performance offers something deeper: a rare encounter between Eastern traditions themselves. It's an invitation to listen, feel and reflect through music that transcends borders.
