As twilight turns to moonlight on June 21, the West Bund Museum will welcome you into David Hockney's colorful world. Based on the artist's 1974 opera set design for The Rake's Progress, this one-night event brings his vivid vision to life in a live, breathtaking celebration of art, music and dance.
The evening, "In the Pool, Into the Night," evokes a real party honoring Hockney's operatic work – an irreverent, sun-drenched feast of friends, laughter and joy. In a modern echo of that moment, the museum becomes a fun reconstruction of Hockney's universe, full of color, music and summer sunset light. "David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away)" will be on display from 7pm to 8pm in a dark, twilight gallery. From 8pm to 9pm, the floor clears, the beat rises, and the dance begins.
Catgroove's professional dancers will teach beginners Soul and Swing steps – just a willingness to move and enjoy. The evening's music will be an invitation to play in Hockney's "pool." Dress in tropical designs, sunset hues, or beach-inspired accessories to match the artist's visual language.
Interactive picture stations will transport you to this dreamworld. Get a pair of limited-edition sunglasses to remember a night in Hockney's palette by posing by pool float props or under a colorful archway. They are in limited quantities, so arrive early to get yours.
The event brings performance, technology and immersive narrative together. It is presented by OUTPUT, a worldwide creative tech business exploring new digital content frontiers, and the Catgroove, a dance group. It's a night at the museum that will immerse you in one of the 20th century's most daring painters' bright, freewheeling imagination.
