Movement & Action: The 3rd China International Kinetic Sculpture Exhibition is ongoing at the China Art Museum.
Kinetic sculpture, an art form that originated in the 1950s, is experiencing a revival as it enters a new era of development. This resurgence is largely due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, which has created a closer and more dynamic relationship between art, society, and technology.
The exhibition features more than 110 pieces of kinetic artworks crafted over the past five years.
The exhibition features more than 110 kinetic artworks by artists from nine countries: China, the US, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, Bulgaria, Belarus, and North Macedonia. The works incorporate gears, chains, cams, cranks, and other transmission devices. Its use of electricity, light, and magnetism has disrupted science and art and expanded sculpture across time and space.
The exhibition has been organized by the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, China Sculpture Institute, China Art Museum, and Shanghai University Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts.
The exhibition seeks to respond to the future through the language of sculpture.
The exhibition aims to deepen research and engagement in kinetic sculptures, advance innovation in art and science, and encourage cultural renewal and global dialogue. It looks at how artists can show innovative creativity with the fast growth of digital technologies and artificial intelligence, and how they understand the change from real life to virtual life while taking on their responsibilities in this new time.
