The smash-hit new French musical "Molière" is making its China debut at Shanghai Culture Square on Friday evening.

With its captivating music, dazzling stage design, and tight-knit story, it is set to ignite another wave of French musical fever in Shanghai's theater scene.

Having premiered in Paris in 2023, the musical tells the life story of French playwright Jean Baptiste Poquelin, alias Molière, with the creative combination of classic theater with hip-hop and urban music.

The musical tells the life story of French playwright Jean Baptiste Poquelin, alias Molière.

Written and composed by Dove Attia, the creator of French musical hits such as "Mozart l'opéra rock" and "Le Roi Soleil", the musical not only entertains, but also pays tribute to France's cultural heritage.

"I'm a fan of Molière," said Attia, who is also the artistic director of the musical. "Before his emergence, comedy often relied on vulgar content. Molière incorporated tragic and satirical elements, elevating comedy to an art form."

"Not much is known about Molière's personal life, including his love affairs and relationship with his father," he added. "Given that his lifestyle at the time was somewhat akin to that of a rock star, I was particularly thrilled to bring the story of such a genius to the stage."

The musical premiered in Paris in 2023.

Attia also noted that because many lines in Molière's works are rhythmic, they are well-suited to be blended with elements such as rap, urban music and street dance, forming this very contemporary production.

Literature enthusiasts can discover even more in this musical. The production references and involves scenes from 18 of Molière's theatrical works, including well-known pieces such as "Tartuffe", "Don Juan", "The Imaginary Invalid", and "The School for Wives", echoing Molière's own tumultuous and colorful life.

The musical stars Yanis Richard in the lead role of Molière. Abi Bernadoth, widely known for winning the ninth season of "The Voice France," plays Prince de Conti.
