Silk Road The Classic Dance Drama Makes a Return to Shanghai Stage
Returning to the birthplace of its Shanghai legacy, Silk Road The Classic Dance Drama takes the stage once more this fall.
From September 6 to 7, the stage of the historic Majestic Theatre will once again come alive with sweeping movements, vivid colors and timeless storytelling.
Presented by the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theatre and produced by Shanghai Jingying Cultural Media Group, this revival celebrates a cultural bond over 40 years strong – tracing back to its unforgettable 1982 debut that first captured the city's heart.
Often described as a "living Dunhuang mural," the show brings to life the beauty of the Mogao Grottoes through breathtaking choreography, evocative storytelling and iconic scenes such as the "Flying Apsaras" and "Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva".
Set during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), it tells the story of a Dunhuang painter and his daughter, whose lives intertwine with a Persian merchant along the ancient Silk Road.
Since its debut in 1979, the show has toured over 40 countries with more than 4,000 performances, establishing itself as a cornerstone of Chinese stage art. This return to Majestic Theatre is both a tribute to its historic Shanghai debut and an upgrade – with refined lighting, staging and a renewed visual experience.
