Wang Yunfei's epic composition 'The Sound of the Silk Road' to be performed in Shanghai

"The Sound of the Silk Road," a symphonic composition honoring the enduring spirit of cross-cultural interchange, will reverberate in the Shanghai Oriental Art Center's Concert Hall on November 29.

Tickets are on sale now.

The musical epic, which was composed by Wang Yunfei, the recipient of the Golden Bell Award for Music, will be conducted by Zhang Lie and performed by the Xi'an Shiyou University Choir, the Shaanxi National Orchestra, and the Shaanxi Broadcasting National Traditional Orchestra.

Across three chapters and seven movements, the performance paints a sweeping soundscape of East-West dialogue along the ancient Silk Road, weaving two thousand years of history into contemporary artistry.

This symphonic production turns the story into a musical tapestry, drawing inspiration from the Broadway-style musical of the same name by the Shaanxi Tourism Group.

The morin khuur, tambur, hand drums, pipa, suona, erhu, and other instruments with Silk Road roots will accompany singers, illustrating how trade used to transport not just products but also ideas, sounds, and civilizations across continents.

"The Sound of the Silk Road" pays homage to the past while simultaneously offering a vision for the Belt and Road era of today, capturing everything from the commotion of ancient caravans to the emotional resonance of universal human need. Every instrument becomes a living repository of connections, and every note narrates a tale of cross-cultural communication.
