American animation "Tom and Jerry" accompanied many of us in our childhoods. It often used jazz to express the characters' emotions.
In addition to adapting existing music, composer Scott Bradley used a lot of jazz soundtracks for the original animation – including Dixieland, Big Band, Swing and Bebop.
A representative tune is "Darktown Strutters' Ball." Because it has a strong vaudeville style, it is often used in shots of performance such as dancing or magic. In one episode, when Tom performs magic tricks for a beautiful cat, this tune sets the mood.
On January 7 and 14, The Danny Zanker Quintet, led by Zanker on bass, will perform "Tom & Jerry In Jazz" at Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai.
When you hear the classic opening song, it will rewind your memories to those young days when you watched a cat chasing a mouse on television.
