Midi brings in an electronic festival
The Midi Music Festival, one of China’s earliest and best-established rock festival brands, will host a new electronic fest in October, collaborating with Mai Ai, a performance/agent company specializing in electronic music.
The Dian Mi Electronic Music Festival 2017, to be held during the National Day holiday from October 1 to 3, released its lineup earlier this week that comprises rock and electronic musicians from home and abroad, covering a wide range of styles.
It is led by veteran Chinese rocker Xie Tianxiao, considered the "godfather of China’s new generation of rock music" who's particularly known for his explosive live performances. He often plays Chinese zither, adding a distinct flavor to his music.
Amid the shining lineup is also Mickey Zhang, a leading figure in Chinese electronic music. Coming from a family of musicians, he has been a dancer since teenager and quickly became intrigued by the newly emerging electronic music in the late 1990s when working in Guangdong Province. Zhang soon became a professional DJ, released his own album and has played in clubs all around the world.
Midi fest, which started in the canteen of a Beijing music school 17 years ago, has become one of the best-known music festivals with concerts around the country every year. Fans often call it "China’s Woodstock."
Catching up with the new generation, Midi started to add electronic stages a few years ago. The field has now expanded into a festival of its own.
Dian Mi fest will be held at Suzhou Taihu CampMIDI, a site in suburban Suzhou, about two hours' drive from Shanghai. Equipped with everything needed for a music festival, the venue surrounded by nature has long been hailed by fans.
The festival will feature four stages: Greenfield, Lakeside, the Psy-Trance and the Pool stage. Presale tickets are now available on damai.cn, from 180 yuan (US$26.8) to 450 yuan. At the door, a three-day pass will be 680 yuan.
