From First Impressions to Everyday Inspiration Around Zhongshan Park
Victoria Grishina from Moscow, Russia, is a Shanghai-based entrepreneur who runs her own consulting company that offers corporate training, IT services and event organization. When she first arrived in China in 2009 as a university student, she had no idea she'd end up settling in this bustling, intriguing city.
But Shanghai left an indelible mark. For the past nine years, it's not just where she lives, but where she actually belongs.
Victoria loves the city's world-class infrastructure, cosmopolitan energy and everyday beauty, which ranges from French-inspired architecture and leafy streets to a bustling food culture. Aside from work, her interests in social dance, art, Pilates, and swimming provide rhythm and balance to her Shanghai lifestyle.
Could you introduce the neighborhood you live in?
I live in Changning District, near Zhongshan Park, a neighborhood where modern life and nature coexist beautifully. Towering skyscrapers rise above the trees, yet just a few steps away lies a lush, tranquil park – a perfect urban balance. It's a place where I can enjoy the energy of the city but still retreat to peace and greenery whenever I need it.
What's the best thing about living in this neighborhood?
Convenience and variety. Everything I need is within walking distance – delicious food from around the world, a great shopping experience, or a spot to relax.
There's a huge selection of restaurants, both local Chinese spots and international cuisine. From trendy cafes to gourmet dining, you're never short of options. The nearby shopping malls are packed with global brands, and there are also plenty of beauty salons, gyms, and activity studios offering everything from Pilates to martial arts.
There's even a riverside promenade where you can unwind and enjoy the view. It's a lively yet peaceful neighborhood that truly has it all.
What attractions here should not be missed?
Definitely Zhongshan Park (780 Changning Rd 长宁路780号) – the largest green space in downtown Shanghai, a perfect escape into nature amidst the urban landscape. It's perfect for a peaceful stroll, a picnic, or just to take in its beautifully landscaped gardens.
I also love the Suzhou Creek, just nearby. Walking along the riverfront area at sunset is one of my favorite ways to unwind after a busy day.
What's your favorite cafe near your home?
I don't drink coffee myself, but for my caffeine-loving friends, there's no shortage of excellent coffee spots in the area. Wabi Cofe (1327 Yuyuan Rd 愚园路1327号) on Yuyuan Road is a must-visit. It's a minimalist, cozy space known for excellent brews and warm service. The baristas are passionate and knowledgeable, and it's the kind of place where people can appreciate a well-made cup of coffee and linger – a calm little corner in a bustling district.
Where should someone eat around here?
It's hard to choose! For comforting Slavic cuisine, Borsch & Kompot (1411 Yuyuan Rd 愚园路1411号) is always a favorite. The Cannery (Unit 106, Bldg 1, 1107 Yuyuan Rd 愚园路1107号1号楼1楼106室) and Commune Reserve (1/F, Bldg 1, 1107 Yuyuan Rd 愚园路1107号1号楼1楼) both offer fresh, elegant European fare in stylish settings. For variety, Cloud Nine Mall has great Korean BBQs, hotpots, sushi restaurants, and Thai options all under one roof.
If I want something special, I head to the Renaissance Hotel (1018 Changning Rd 长宁路1018号) restaurant on the 26th floor – the view is breathtaking, and the lunch and steak sets are excellent. It's ideal for both business meetings and relaxed dinners.
From high fashion to emerging designers, from flowers to fresh produce, where do you shop in your neighborhood?
Although I do most of my shopping online, I still enjoy visiting Cloud Nine Mall (1018 Changning Rd 长宁录1018号) for fashion staples like Zara, Uniqlo, and Victoria's Secret. For something more unique, Blackhead (1173 Yuyuan Rd 愚园路1173号) is my go-to jewelry shop. They carry modern, artistic pieces – the kind that make a quiet statement and add personality to any outfit.
Is there a neighborhood place you recommend for a night out or simply a drink after work?
For a relaxed drink after work, I'd recommend Commune Reserve and The Cannery. Both offer a chic ambiance, great cocktails, and a nice atmosphere to unwind. These spots are perfect for a casual night out with friends or even a solo drink to enjoy the vibe of the city. If you're looking for somewhere a bit more lively, both places have great social energy, making them ideal for an after-work hangout.
Have you made any discoveries in your neighborhood lately?
Yes! A rebranded mall called Metro Town (玫瑰坊) just opened right by the subway exit. It's full of authentic Japanese restaurants and niche import shops – a real foodie find.
I've discovered GH5 Dance Studio (F1, 2/F East, 890 Changning Rd 长宁路890号玫瑰坊东区2楼F1室), which has quickly become one of my favorite places for fitness and dance.
And for music lovers, Yuyintang (B1-02, 1398 Yuyuan Rd 愚园路1398号B1-02) across from Zhongshan Park is a gem – an energetic venue where local and international artists perform rock, punk, metal, and Indie acts regularly. It's the perfect spot for a night of live music and good vibes.
