Shanghai Jiao Tong University has launched UnitaryLab, a groundbreaking quantum scientific computing platform designed to solve extremely complex problems that challenge traditional computers.

The initial version, UnitaryLab 1.0, focuses on solving differential equations, a central task in scientific computing, and delivers remarkable efficiency gains.

Theoretical estimates indicate it can accelerate solutions for three-dimensional equations by more than six times, five-dimensional equations by 25,000 times, and nine-dimensional equations by trillions of times. This marks a significant move from theoretical research toward practical industrial application.

The breakthrough relies on a series of quantum algorithms developed by the team led by Professor Jin Shi and Nana Liu at the university. This innovation creatively transforms complex mathematical equations into a format that a quantum computer can process directly.

This solves a major industry challenge of adapting quantum methods to real-world scientific and engineering problems. This framework was recognized as the sole mathematical achievement highlighted in the 2024 annual report of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

UnitaryLab is designed for ease of use, integrating modeling, algorithm selection, and result visualization into a simple, user-friendly workflow.

Users simply input the core parameters of their problem, and the platform automatically handles the complex conversion and calculation, with no quantum knowledge or manual coding required.

“This product dramatically lowers the barrier to using quantum computing,” said Zhang Lei, the platform's lead. Engineers, researchers, and students can now perform quantum simulations efficiently, significantly shortening project timelines.

Looking ahead, the team plans to advance quantum algorithm innovations, develop dedicated hardware tailored for feature-specific algorithms, and expand the functional modules and application ecosystem of UnitaryLab, aiming to promote the large-scale implementation of integrated software-hardware solutions.
