Hermès is inviting the public to “Mystery at the Grooms’” in Shanghai, a playful and interactive experience showcasing the creativity of the luxury brand’s 16 métiers. Visitors can use their quick wits and ingenuity to find clues and solve a mystery as they plunge into a universe built around Hermès objects, all stitched together by a common inspirational thread that spans generations: the horse.
“Playing means being together. Play is movement, freedom, imagination, fantasy, lightness ... and the horse is our first companion in the playground of creation,” said Pierre-Alexis Dumas, artistic director of Hermès.
“Mystery at the Grooms’” is a playful and interactive experience showcasing the creativity of the luxury brand.
As they set out to solve the case, visitors can discover a panorama of Hermès objects from across the eras, a reflection of the house’s fine craftsmanship.
Abundant, innovative and singular, these Hermès creations become the centrepieces of this experience where guests-turned-Hermès-detectives are asked to examine the familiar and the mysterious in a different light.
A word to the wise: following the hoofprints — either literal or implied — on each of these objects will be the key to unravelling the mystery.
Hermès’ equestrian heritage, the throughline that allows for constantly renewed inspiration, hits its full stride at the Grooms’ House. This theatrical set within Shanghai’s West Bund Dome transports visitors to a mysterious residence where the Grooms live with their equine friends.
How many of the missing herd can you find before time runs out?
Inside, the 16 Hermès métiers converge for the first time. From leather goods, whose Hermès Della Cavalleria Mini bag evokes a saddle, to silk, the Brides de gala scarf flying its bridle motif, and shoes, with one pair that leaves prints shaped like horseshoes, each métier contributes unique creations with ties to the horse.
Other historic Hermès pieces, such as the Kelly rocking horse, also join the fun.
The Grooms have opened the doors to guests, but on their arrival, it becomes clear that mischief is afoot; the Grooms’ herd of horses has disappeared! Could they be hiding among the Hermès objects? It’s up to the visitors to investigate a trail of scattered clues to track them down.
The horses have lots of hiding places throughout the house’s nine rooms. Maybe Ringlet is peeking out from behind giant carrots in the hay bales of the pantry.
While the players search everywhere for all the hidden horses, the voice of the famous equestrian detective Mr Honoré guides them from a distance. Coincidentally, he has the same name as the street in Paris where Hermès’ original store is located.
The horses in this sneaky herd have lots of hiding places throughout the house’s nine rooms. Maybe Ringlet is peeking out from behind giant carrots in the hay bales of the pantry, or Clip-Clop is curled up beneath a Rocabar blanket in the dormitory.
In a flash, with just the swish of a horse’s tail, the game is over. How many of the missing herd can you find before time runs out? Whether you’re a youngster aged 10 and above or an experienced player, everyone can become a Hermès detective, solve the case and have fun.
