Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen's "A Doll's House" has returned to the stage of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center.

The play, running until March 19, delves into the complexities of marriage and relationships.

The plot revolves around Nora, a woman who appears to have it all: a devoted husband named Helmer, adorable children, and close friends. But when a secret from her past threatens to ruin her happiness, Nora is forced to face reality and make difficult decisions.

When the secret – a fraud that Nora had once committed without her husband's knowledge to obtain a loan needed to save his life – is revealed, Helmer reacts with outrage and repudiates her out of concern for his social reputation.

Nora then realizes that she has been treated as if she were a toy her entire life. She declares her independence from her husband and leaves their house.

Despite the fact that the play was written in 1879, its central theme of feminism is still relevant today. Its portrayal of a woman's struggle to find her own identity and break free from societal norms continues to inspire audiences worldwide.

Since the end of 2019, there have been three versions of the play staged at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. This time, Wang Huan acts as the director of the play, as well as the script translator and the stage designer. The play stars Mai Duo and Gu Xin.

There is no physical separation between the living room, bedroom and study in this setting. The actors are free to move around in their "home." The entire space distorts and transforms when Nora's secret is revealed, with the floor rising, furniture falling, and actors suspended in the air.

The new version of the play features adjustments to the stage design, such as stronger lighting contrasts and atypical music.
