June 13, 2026
TBD

The Dragon Boat Festival is a time-honored Chinese holiday celebrating community, health, and tradition. Last Saturday, it also served as a vibrant bridge for cross-cultural exchange in Shanghai.

Hosted by the Yichuan Road Subdistrict and City News Service, the "Dragon Boat Festival Wonderland" invited around 10 expats from countries including Russia, Morocco, the United States, Belarus, and South Korea to join local residents and immerse themselves in authentic customs.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Suzhou Creek at the Banma Suzhou Creek Station · 1690 Party-Mass Service Center, the event offered a hands-on afternoon of interactive games, traditional handicrafts, and festival food.

When asked to describe the vibe of the event in a single word, Cho Min-young of South Korea chose "green."

"Green is the color of June and the Dragon Boat Festival," Cho said. "Every single booth here incorporated elements of green, which really brought the holiday's atmosphere to life."

The venue was transformed into three interactive zones, allowing participants to easily explore the holiday's rich heritage. In Folk Customs Arena, participants stepped into history by writing wishes for health and peace on customized blessing tags. They also enjoyed "Shooting the Five Poisons," tossing sandbags at a themed dartboard – a traditional symbolic game meant to drive away illness and bad luck for the year ahead.

Chinese and international participants teamed up to craft the holiday's most iconic staples in the Summer Handicraft Workshop. They wove colorful, zongzi-shaped sachets and filled them with fragrant, protective herbs like mugwort and mint. Afterward, local experts taught them the tricky art of folding bamboo leaves and stuffing sticky rice to make authentic zongzi, a festival delicacy.

"The best part about wrapping zongzi is that it is both simple and challenging," said Dante Munoz from New York. "It means even young children can fully immerse themselves in the activity. It is easy to pick up, but truly mastering the technique takes some real effort."
