Fashion Season Lights Up Wenzaobang Riverbank
A new fashion season has opened along the Wenzaobang riverbank in northern Shanghai.
The "Fashion Miaohang" consumption season will run through the rest of the year, with markets and shopping deals rolling out across Baoshan District's Miaohang Town.
The season has four tracks: sustainable, tech-driven, fan-culture, and dessert-and-sweets retail.
Seven companies formed a fashion alliance to back the plan. They include secondhand-goods platform ATRenew, robotics maker Unitree and e-commerce giant JD.com.
The events are grouped into three types. A "Sweet Summer" day is focused on romance, matchmaking and Chinese-style social mixers.
A luxury showcase brings together high-end watches, gold jewelry and women's fashion brands, with discounts for shoppers.
A green night market runs along the riverbank, mixing secondhand goods, upcycled crafts, intangible-heritage demonstrations, eco-friendly food stalls, pet events and live music.
The venue is the MOD⁺ Smart Park Innovation Port, a tech and fashion campus along the Wenzaobang. The park is inside a former cotton warehouse, once the largest of its kind in the Far East, now converted into an office and event space.
The Wenzaobang is one of Shanghai's three main waterways, along with the Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek. It remains one of the Huangpu's key tributaries, and it runs right past the park gates.
At the market's opening over the weekend, a bottle-recycling machine drew crowds. Visitors dropped in used plastic bottles and watched them turn into souvenirs made of recycled plastic.
Organizers also signed a research deal with Tongji University's Circular Economy Research Institute, aiming to turn recycled textiles into real products rather than talking points.
Miaohang was known as a "hundred-million-yuan village" for its factory wealth in the 1980s. In the 1990s, foreign supermarkets moved in. More recently, e-commerce firms and secondhand-luxury resellers set up shop there. Now the town wants fashion to be its next act.
