Panlong Xintiandi Marks 3rd Anniversary With Floating Water Market
Shanghai Panlong Xintiandi in suburban Qingpu District has kicked off its third anniversary celebration with the launch of a water market, featuring Shanghai's first floating market that blends traditional Jiangnan water town culture with modern urban micro-vacation experiences.
Running through June 7, it reinterprets classic Jiangnan (regions to the south of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River) landscapes and crafts through immersive scenes, art installations and hands-on experiences for visitors.
Panlong's history as a significant representative of Jiangnan culture dates back more than 1,400 years ago. By the early half of the 20th century, it had grown into a booming economic hub.
Rooted in Panlong's water-based history, the floating market revives the ancient trading scene where villagers once gathered by waterways to sell agricultural goods, textiles and fish.
Rowboats carrying Jiangnan specialty products cruise along the site's natural water systems, while visitors can shop at waterside stalls, take kayaks and experience traditional folk crafts, merging historical charm with modern aesthetic design.
International artist Jovana and PINWU Studio have created large-scale installations at Xianghua Bridge and Yanyu Covered Bridge, using rice, tubu (homespun cloth) and bamboo weaving sourced from Jiangnan water towns.
The event also brings together local tenants, artists and craftspeople from Qingshan Village in neighbouring Zhejiang province. Visitors can take part in hands-on workshops, including plant tie-dye, tubu collage and ceramic painting.
Panlong Xintiandi is also expanding its retail mix. The pet-friendly destination has opened nearly 40 new stores, around 70 percent of them first stores or concept formats.
