The Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) is hosting "Jean Nouvel: Without the Artist, Architecture Does Not Exist" until August as part of its fifth anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition features films, architectural models, archives, installations and a reconstructed workspace from the Pritzker Prize-winning architect's five-decade career.

Nouvel curated and designed the exhibition, which goes beyond retrospection to explain his creative processes.

He said architecture must evoke emotions through space, light, time and history.

Born in 1945 in Fumel, Lot-et-Garonne, and graduating from Paris' École des Beaux-Arts, Nouvel began his architectural career in the 1970s.

His global portfolio includes landmark projects such as the Philharmonie de Paris, the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain-Place du Palais-Royal, and Qatar's National Museum.

Nouvel is noted for his contextual detail rather than style. He customizes each project for its city, culture, function and surroundings, making it irreplaceable.

He is known as "a magician of light," bringing spaces to life and creating poetic, emotive interactions between architecture and its environment.

He won architecture's top prize, the Pritzker, in 2008.

Nouvel believes architecture should create an artistic atmosphere that reflects history, culture and geography. MAP's artistic presentation stems from this belief.

This is also Nouvel's first solo exhibition in a structure he designed. MAP is more than just a host location; it is an essential component of the exhibition. Visitors are immediately immersed in Nouvel's world the instant they walk through the doors.

He sees the museum as "territory" – a four-hectare cultural landscape stretching to the Huangpu River.

The display begins when visitors stroll onto the white-granite plaza. MAP is the first item visible, surrounded by woods that separate it from the towers, giving it clarity and independence.

The Mirror Gallery reflects the Bund's historic skyline in flowing motion; the east-facing window catches the Lujiazui skyline as a natural canvas of light; and the central atrium, with its five-story vertical gap, provides diverse viewpoints for installation art.

The show also follows Nouvel's ongoing relationship with China, with buildings such as the Shanghai Star Museum, Guangzhou's Tencent Tower, and Shenzhen Opera House, each of which is a unique response to local climates and urban life.

Reconstructing his Paris workspace, where 16 computers allow visitors to browse hundreds of project archives, provides a rare peek into his working techniques.

Models of iconic projects are displayed alongside, such as the Philharmonie de Paris, whose cast-aluminum surface absorbs shifting light to reflect each concert's distinct mood, and the Fondation Cartier, where historic facades meet translucent exhibition rooms that open to the street.
