A Global Techno Journey Ends in Shanghai with Techno Worlds
Initiated in 2021 by cultural institutions of Germany, "Techno Worlds – Final Sampling" has now opened at the Power Station of Art (PSA). It also marks PSA's first project to fully focus on music and its related cultural fields.
This is a five-year global touring exhibition that not only explores music itself, but also engages with multiple dimensions including art, media, technology, identity and space. It presents diverse narratives and practices across different times and locations.
The exhibition has previously been shown in Budapest, Montreal, New York, Portland, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Montevideo, Zurich, Dresden, Columbus, Kolkata and Beijing. As the final stop of the tour, the Shanghai edition incorporates more works by Chinese artists, further expanding and reshaping the interpretations and meanings of Techno.
Originating in Detroit, Techno has rapidly developed and spread worldwide since the 1980s. It has not only shaped the history of music, but has also had a profound impact on contemporary culture, art, popular culture, media consumption and technology.
In Germany, Techno is seen as a link between East and West. Berlin, in particular, gained global attention in the 1990s through events like the Love Parade and a series of legendary Techno clubs, gradually emerging as one of the most important Techno cities in the world.
Techno Worlds is both a state of being and a sampling of history with feedback on the present. Bringing together 23 works from different times and contexts, the exhibition reflects the differences and connections between people and culture, history and technology.
On the opening night, the exhibition also features a special performance program – Final Sampling: Live Sets. Presented in a series of continuous sets, artists will perform live within a set time frame, using and adjusting sound, rhythm, and related media in real time to gradually shape their performances.
