Brush Meets Clay: Modern Masters and Yixing Teapots at Long Museum
The "Charm of Clay, Fragrance of Ink: A Special Exhibition of Masterpieces in Modern Chinese Painting and Yixing Teapots" opened at the Long Museum West Bund recently.
Bringing together treasured works by 20th-century Chinese painting masters, such as Zhang Daqian, Li Kuchan, Huang Yongyu, Wu Zuoren, Liu Haisu, the exhibition showcases early collaborations between these household names and contemporary Yixing potters, where brush met clay on teapots.
With the engagement of scholars and literati, the humble daily vessel of clay from Yixing, a thousand-year-old pottery capital, is elevated into a carrier of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal carving – imbued with the profound heritage of Chinese culture.
This unique fusion allows visitors not only to admire the artistic flair of these painting masters but also to take a glimpse into the miniature universe within each vessel – a harmonious convergence of art, craft, and culture.
