Exploring Ancient China Through Virtual Reality
The Shanghai Museum is using virtual reality to bring a Chinese Bronze Age myth to life.
Fuhao, a 13th-century BCE female general, and the Shang Dynasty world are brought to vivid, walk-through reality in this immersive VR film about her epic battles, royal romance with King Wuding, and sacred rituals.
The story unfolds several centuries before the main events of The Investiture of the Gods, set during the peak of the Shang Dynasty and the golden age of bronze civilization.
Technically, the experience is designed to immerse rather than observe. A 360-degree panorama, spatial sound, and detailed graphics evoke a strong sense of presence.
Viewers are immersed in vast ceremonial spaces, battle scenes, and mythological imagery. The result is a different way of engaging with history.
