Flatform's First China Show Lands in Shanghai
An exhibition titled "Concert for Films and Works" has opened at the Power Station of Art, marking the first major solo show in China by the Italian artist collective Flatform. The exhibition offers a comprehensive look at the group's key artistic practices over the past two decades.
Founded in Milan in 2006, Flatform is now based between Milan and Berlin.
Their interdisciplinary work spans video, installation, and live performance, and has been presented at major international institutions including Center Pompidou, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Museum of Arts of the XXI Century (MAXXI) and Fondazione Prada Milano.
This exhibition features more than ten installation works, each composed of moving images alongside their corresponding physical elements.
In the exhibition title, "films" and "works" are not simply presented side by side – they reflect the collective's distinctive creative method.
By combining and transforming video, installation, and various media, Flatform brings seemingly disparate elements into a shared system, where they intertwine and influence one another like an ever-evolving composition.
For the group, moving image is always the starting point of creation.
The physical works – whether paintings, sculptures, or performative elements – serve as material counterparts to the image, translating its intangible, fluid nature into tangible forms within space. Through this process, new qualities emerge, taking root and accumulating within the work.
