'Into The Grey' Explores Shen Chen's Quiet World of Geometry and Abstraction

A quiet world of layered greys, blurred geometry, and meditative brushwork arrives at Fosun Foundation as artist Shen Chen unveils his new solo exhibition "Into The Grey."

Running from May 22 to June 21, the exhibition presents more than 50 works spanning nearly four decades of the Shanghai-born artist's career, tracing his evolution from experimental ink painting to his signature acrylic "platform paintings."

The exhibition unfolds across two floors of Fosun Foundation, exploring the tension between structure and softness, precision and ambiguity. Shen Chen, who moved to New York in 1988, is known for creating immersive grey-toned compositions through countless vertical brushstrokes layered by hand. Influenced by both Chinese ink traditions and Western minimalism, his works evoke a hazy, atmospheric depth that feels both deeply contemporary and rooted in Eastern philosophy.

The exhibition also revisits the artist's early experiments from the late 1980s and 1990s, including mixed-media works on paper and canvas that reveal his gradual transition from ink to acrylic. Together, the works offer an intimate look into how Shen Chen has spent decades expanding the emotional and spatial possibilities of abstract painting.

Set against the striking architecture of Fosun Foundation on the Bund, "Into The Grey" invites visitors into a contemplative visual experience where repetition, rhythm, and subtle tonal shifts become a form of quiet meditation.
