Is This Supposed to be Art?
Serbian artist Mateja Ristić will be holding a solo exhibition, Ist das etwa Kunst? (Is this Supposed to be Art), at Halcyon Gallery from May 9 to 30.
Keen to explore the definition and limits of art, the exhibition is a reflection of the artist's inner confusions and turmoil as to what is art: who decides what is art, what is its value in today's society, and how this has warped the boundaries of what constitutes as art.
The main showcase is a video performance featuring Mateja Ristić and his wife, as she ruthlessly attacks him while asking him what is art, with the entire process reflecting a soul-searching inquiry on Mateja Ristić's end. Alongside the video performances are 18 easel paintings in acrylic and mixed media, deliberately left unnamed to allow visitors critique and reflect on the art pieces without interferences.
You will need an appointment to visit the exhibition. If you are interested, you can contact Halcyon Gallery (翡翠画廊) on WeChat to arrange for a time slot.
Date: May 9-30, Tuesdays to Saturdays
