Lines of Convergence: Meridian in Contemporary Chinese Art

The summer group exhibition Meridian (子午线): Intersections in Chinese Art by Art+ Shanghai features six artists whose diverse practices reflect the diversity of contemporary Chinese art.

The exhibition explores the spaces between artistic languages, generations, and approaches rather than promoting one style or subject.

The exhibition, titled after the celestial meridian – the line the sun crosses at its zenith – considers intersections as places of new meaning.

The six artists – Chen Chunfei, Tang Zhengwei, Liu Gang, Ling Haipeng, Xu Chen, and Yu Zhitong – view Chinese art from different perspectives.

Chen Chunfei transforms landscapes and memories into atmospheric abstractions, while Tang Zhengwei uses intricate paper-cutting to translate research and data into reflections on contemporary society.

Liu Gang explores temporality through graphite and acrylic, and Ling Haipeng reinterprets the structural principles of traditional jiehua painting through mathematical and architectural logic.

Xu Chen revisits the scholarly tradition of qinggong, bringing everyday objects into dialogue with shanshui, while Yu Zhitong combines East Asian pictorial traditions with Western surrealism to create a hybrid, diasporic visual language.

Together, these diverse practices form a constellation of perspectives, suggesting that the vitality of contemporary Chinese art lies not in consensus, but in the productive intersections between tradition and innovation, representation and abstraction, and personal experience and cultural memory.
