The zero-carbon transformation of Shanghai's most iconic commercial and historical districts is being showcased at the 2026 Shanghai International Carbon Neutrality Expo, which opened at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on Wednesday.

The three-day event features green technology, sustainable consumption, and urban updates from nearly 300 companies across 12 countries and regions.

The commercial hubs of Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road, and Xintiandi lead the display of low-carbon upgrades in high-density urban areas.

Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street features an energy efficiency project. The initiative includes low-carbon retrofits for landmark properties like the New World Daimaru Department Store, Baodaxiang Shopping Center, and the Radisson Blu Hotel, all supported by a digital twin management platform.

Huaihai Road drives sustainable fashion through urban renewal, including the renovation of the Jiushi Fuxing Mansion and the HAI550 commercial upgrade.

"Environmental protection is not just for the government or one company, but for all consumers and residents to create a better life together," said Jason Zhao of DiKKA, a green brand exhibiting at the expo.

The company recycles plastic bottles, beverage cans, and coffee grounds to manufacture bags, notebooks, pens, and phone stands. At the expo, the brand unveiled an office series that provides carbon footprint data to help companies with environmental, social, and governance reporting.

Cultural landmarks have also joined the green shift.

The Memorial Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Xintiandi launched its first zero-waste exhibition, while the Shanghai International Flower Festival has integrated low-carbon concepts throughout the visitor experience.

To support these commercial hubs, the local district has deployed a virtual power plant that pools and schedules electricity resources from commercial buildings to optimize power allocation.
