New Chapter for No. 1 on the Bund: Jiushi Art Museum Opens with 'Before the Earth Falls Down'

Building No. 1 on the Bund embarks on a new chapter: Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum's new venue officially opens with its inaugural exhibition "Before the Earth Falls Down."

As an international contemporary art exhibition, independently curated by Jiushi Art Museum, curator Jiang Jiehong has invited nine international artists to explore global ecological and environmental development issues through diverse artistic media such as painting, installation, video, and sound, all within the historic building.

The building was originally called Asia Building and was completed in 1916. Its reinforced concrete structure exhibits an eclectic blend of Neoclassical and Baroque styles.

The renovation of the new venue was led by German architectural firm gmp Architects, which preserved the original structure and details of the building, restored the riverside window views, and replicated historical floor patterns, offering visitors a unique experience where architecture and river scenery blend seamlessly.

According to Tang Mingze, the museum's project manager, the second floor primarily serves as the exhibition hall, while the third floor not only displays artworks but also features functional areas such as a coffee lounge and a cultural and creative experience zone. Additionally, public education programs and exhibition workshops will be organized to enrich the visitor experience.

"Before the Earth Falls Down" transforms contemporary reflections on global ecological development into perceptible and resonant artistic expressions, guiding viewers to reexamine the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, and awakening a sense of responsibility to protect the natural world.

Chinese artist Yin Xiuzhen's work "Plant" extends beyond the museum to the bus stop outside. Visitors are even invited to bring their own houseplants to the museum and take part in a relay replacement of the plant exhibits, continuously breathing new life into the artwork.
