New Shanghai Exhibition Explores a World Under the Sun
A solo exhibition by Shanghai-based artist Lin Fanglu continues her exploration of fiber, the body and traditional material culture, using the sun as a thread to connect intimate bodily sensations of body skin and fiber with broader ideas of land, place and the shared world.
Titled "Under the Sun," the exhibition features a series of fiber-based artworks inspired by the sun, the earth, clouds, the moon and dreams, creating an imaginative world where art and nature intertwine.
At the entrance, Golden Crow captures the sun's changing colors, from vibrant red and orange to yellow. In the sky, it shines brightly, while on the earth, its golden light symbolizes the power to nurture life and growth.
Lin's work explores the relationship between people and textiles. Through wrapping, binding, stitching and dyeing, the body and materials interact, shaping each other. Rather than passive objects, fibers actively participate in the creative process, helping shape the final form of each artwork.
Inspired by her fieldwork in Xichou County, Wenshan, Yunnan Province, Lin's latest creations combine tie-dye techniques with ethnic motifs. Their folded, twisted and radiating forms, in colors ranging from bright orange and yellow to indigo and blue-gray, evoke flowers, organs, mountains and planets visually.
Lin graduated with a master's degree from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2016 and received the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize in 2021. Her works have been exhibited at institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Power Station of Art in Shanghai.
