
Shanghai Lady Portrait File Captures the Spirit of Shanghai's Women
Portraits of Shanghai's women are taking the spotlight in a new photography exhibition that captures the spirit and diversity of the city.
The photography exhibition "Shanghai Lady – Portrait File" is now on view at HKRI Taikoo Hui, presenting 33 striking black-and-white portraits by photographer He Zhaoya.
The exhibition features women from diverse fields, including culture, education, business, art and intangible cultural heritage. Through these portraits, the show highlights the confidence, resilience and individuality of women living and working in Shanghai.
Many of the portraits are set against iconic Shanghai landmarks from different eras, linking the personal stories of the women with the city's evolving urban landscape.
She said the project reflects her long-term interest in documenting the identity of women in the city. "For more than 30 years, I have been photographing women in Shanghai," she told City News Service. "Each series is like a slice of a cake, showing one side of the city and the women who live in it."
She added that the latest exhibition aims to create a visual record of the city's evolving female identity. "This time I wanted to build a portrait archive for the city," she said. "Shanghai is a city shaped by many waves of people, and the image of the 'Shanghai lady' has continued to evolve."
Jointly organized by the Shanghai Women Photographers Association, HKRI Taikoo Hui and Fujian Chunlun Group, the exhibition runs from March 6 to March 15, offering visitors a visual tribute to the women who contribute to Shanghai's vibrant cultural life.Shanghai's women take center stage in a new photography exhibition celebrating their stories and the city they shape.
