'Shanghai Story' Exhibition Traces City's Time-Honored Brands
Shanghai opened an exhibition tracing the history of some of its most renowned brands, including bicycles, watches, cameras, pens, and sports equipment.
The Shanghai Story: The Past And Present Of Time-Honored Brands opened at the Shanghai Archives on September 19. Archival documents, photos, and products from nearly 20 Shanghai brands are on display. The exhibition runs until December.
The exhibition includes Phoenix Bicycle, Shanghai Watch, Seagull Camera, Butterfly Sewing Machine, Double Happiness, Hero Pen, Zhonghua Pencil, Warrior Shoes, Lao Feng Xiang and Lei Yun Shang.
The Phoenix display traces the brand to Shanghai's early bicycle industry. In 1897, Nanjing Road saw the opening of China's first bicycle shop, and in 1959, Shanghai Bicycle No. 3 Factory introduced the Phoenix trademark.
Visitors can see production documents and an application for the Phoenix PA18 bicycle to receive a national quality award.
The Shanghai Watch brand began producing the A581 model in 1958 after technicians developed an early prototype in 1955.
The Seagull Camera display tells how six workers developed the Shanghai 58-1 camera in a small workshop in 1957. The first model was completed in January 1958.
The Butterfly Sewing Machine section shows how sewing machines became part of family life. The display includes factory photos, production documents, and an old sewing machine.
Other exhibits include Double Happiness table tennis equipment, Hero fountain pens and Zhonghua pencils. The exhibition covers Lao Feng Xiang jewelry and Lei Yun Shang pharmaceutical histories.
A market features about 20 Shanghai companies, with food, cosmetics, optical services and other products.
