Anoushka Shankar to Open Shanghai Oriental Art Center's International Superstar Series
Noted sitarist and musician Anoushka Shankar will open Shanghai Oriental Art Center's International Superstar Series with a concert on October 16.
In the next two months, 10 world-class international musicians from Russia, Iceland, Georgia, India, Sweden and China will take the stage one after another, interpreting the diverse artistic genres of world classical music.
As a 13-time Grammy-nominated recording artist, Shankar carries on the legacy of her father, Indian sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. She has studied exclusively under him from the age of nine and made her professional debut at the age of 13 in New Delhi.
As the first Indian musician to perform live and serve as a presenter at the Grammy Awards, Shankar has consistently expanded her career beyond traditional Indian classical music.
With a catalogue spanning electronica, jazz, flamenco, and Western classical music, she has collaborated with an extraordinarily diverse array of artists, including Herbie Hancock, Patti Smith, Sting, Zubin Mehta, and her half-sister Norah Jones.
She is also a film composer and art curator.
Shankar will be joined by Arun Ghosh (clarinet/keys), Tom Farmer (double bass), and Sarathy Korwar (percussion) for her Shanghai concert.
The program will feature her father's "Fire Night" and "Traces of You," which she performed with Norah Jones.
Other notable performances in the International Superstar Series include two concerts by Martha Argerich and Friends, a vocal recital by opera queen Angela Gheorghiu, and piano recitals by Víkingur Ólafsson and Khatia Buniatishvili.
