Broadway Hit 'Kinky Boots' Returns to Shanghai After Eight-Year Hiatus
The globally acclaimed original Broadway musical "Kinky Boots" will kick off the Shanghai stop of its China tour at the West Bund Theater on November 3. The musical will stage 16 performances at the venue from November 3 to 15.
The show faithfully recreates the original Tony Award-winning version and brings the creative team and stellar cast from the 2026 US tour to China. A special highlight for the Shanghai run is the exclusive "Sparkle Parties," which will be held in the lobby of the theater for evening performances during the show's opening week. Surprise cast members from the musical will drop by to interact with audiences in the city.
A phenomenal hit in the history of musicals, the show is adapted from a true story. It follows Charlie, heir to a traditional shoe factory, who takes on the burden of saving the family factory after his father's sudden death. When he crosses paths with Lola, a gifted performer, they stumble upon a brand-new business opportunity.
Ever since its debut, "Kinky Boots" has taken the world by storm with its uplifting, empowering message and upbeat soundtrack.
The musical made its Broadway premiere in 2013, launched its first United States tour in 2014, and sparked a craze after landing in London's West End in 2015. Starting from 2016, localized productions in South Korea, Japan, Australia and other countries have successively hit the stage, fueling its global popularity and establishing it as an evergreen theatrical IP.
The musical has also won many international honors, including six Tony Awards and three Laurence Olivier Awards. In 2018, it embarked on a tour across Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Its 74 shows drew over 60,000 Chinese audience members.
After an eight-year hiatus, this iconic red glamour show is returning to Shanghai, backed by the elite creative crew from Broadway to present the full high-level Tony Award-winning original version.
