The Hong Kong Dance Company, celebrating its 45th anniversary, will present "Kung Fu Artistry: Bruce Lee's No Way as Way" in Shanghai this weekend.

This performance delves into the connections between martial arts and Taoism, as well as the dynamics of power and freedom and the interplay between tradition and contemporary themes, all expressed through dance.

Under Artistic Director Yang Yuntao, the dancers trained in martial arts, incorporating Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do principles into their movements.

The art and costume design are helmed by Man Lim-chung, a multiple winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Art Direction. Flowing ink wash effects, multimedia calligraphy, and an interplay of virtual and tangible light and shadow create a stage landscape steeped in Eastern aesthetics, making the audience feel as if they are inside a moving picture.

The music is by Hong Kong jazz pianist and film composer Patrick Lui. Traditional drumbeats, electronic sounds, and jazz idioms blend, aligning with the dancers' breath, effort, and rhythm to create a sonic reflection of their physicality.

Lui also subtly integrates musical elements from Bruce Lee's films into the original score and improvisation – not only paying homage to a legend but also surprising the audience with the familiar made fresh.

Bruce Lee was deeply interested in philosophy and majored in it at university. In his eyes, philosophy was not mere theory; it was the guiding principle of martial arts and a concrete practice of everyday life.

He founded Jeet Kune Do, a synthesis of Wing Chun, boxing, fencing, and Muay Thai. For him, martial arts were never about rigid techniques but about finding one's own path through constant breakthrough.

For the Hong Kong Dance Company, however, "Kung Fu Artistry" is not really about martial arts per se; it is about the philosophical legacy Bruce Lee left to the world: how to break through forms and express oneself with honesty.
